National Mineral Development
Corporation Limited (NMDC) was established as a fully owned Government
of India Corporation in 1958 with the objective of developing all
minerals other than coal, petroleum oil and atomic minerals. Since
inception involved in the exploration of wide range of minerals
including iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, lime stone, dolomite,
gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite,
beach sands etc.

The Corporation is presently
operating three large mechanised iron ore mines - two in Chattisgarh
known as Bailadila Deposit-14/11C and Bailadila Deposit-5 and the
third at Donimalai in Bellary - Hospet sector of Karnataka. The
Corporation is also operating the only mechanised diamond mine in
the country at Panna in Madhya Pradesh. NMDC has made valuable and
substantial contribution to the national effortsin the mineral sector
during the last four decades and has been recently been accorded
the states of schedule-A Public Sector Company by the GOI "Mini
Ratna" in 'A' category in its categorisation of Public Enterprises.
The Corporation has a strong
back up of an ISO 9001 certified R&D centre, which has been
declared as the "Centre of Excellence" in the field of
mineral processing by the Expert Group of UNIDO.

Operating Mines

Bailadila Deposit-14
- Bailadila-14 mine is the first large scale open cast mechanised
iron ore mine in India for which DPR was prepared by NMDC. The mine
has the distinction of having unique down-the-hill conveyor system
passing through a tunnel to transport iron ore from crushing plant
to processing plant.
Bailadila Deposit-11/C - To supplement production of Bailadila-14
mine, NMDC has commissioned in June 1988 a new mine at Deposit-11C,
with a reserve of 131 million tonnes close to Bailadila-14. The
mineable reserves as on April, 2003 are 72.56 million tonnes. The
mine has been developed to produce 5.0 million tonnes of ROM ore
per annum.
Donimalai Iron Ore Mine
- The saga of NMDC includes the pioneering exploration activity
carried out for developing iron ore mines in Karnataka in various
regions like Kudremukh, Donimalai, Bababudan, Kumaraswamy and Ramandurg.
NMDC developed the Donimalai mine in this area to export ore to
Japan and South Korea. The mine was awarded ISO 9002 Certification
in February, 1999.

| Panna Diamond Mine
- Today, NMDC is the only organised producer of diamond in India from
its Majhgawan mine at Panna, Madhya Pradesh and continues to carry
on the legend and past glory through its untiring efforts. |

Award by Hyderabad Management Association to the CMD during Bailadila
Deposit-5 the year 1996-97, 1999-2000

Gold Award by the International Greenland Society to the CMD during
the year 1997-98.

Award by the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering for the year
1995-96, 1999-2000, 2001-02.

Award in Iron Ore Group by CAPAXIL for the year 1996-97.
